WWE Wants to Keep Making Movies, WWhaaaa?
When I heard that World Wrestling Entertainment wanted to make more films despite the fact the last three have bombed, I thought to myself, “The WWE has been making movies? Their wrestlers can’t even act well in the ring. What makes them think they’re such thespians?”
Apparently it’s true and according to Variety, they plan on making more films through their studio, the creatively titled WWE Films.
They don’t have much going for them right now. They’ve already produced three films, “See No Evil,” “The Marine” and “The Condemned” all of which featured wrestlers and were huge bombs. They were clearly designed for their wrestling fans and it’s no wonder they bombed because when you try to introduce things like plot, exposition and subtext to wrestling fans, they get frustrated, throw their Old Milwaukees at the TV, start punching the walls and their trailer tips over.
But they are getting serious. This time they’ve hired Steve Barrett as their new vice president who comes to WWE from Dimension Films where he produced “The Mist” and the upcoming “Pirahna” remake. He’s so excited about capitalizing on WWE’s brand image that he’s given himself the job title, “Executive Producer of Ass Kickings.”
He’s already brokered a deal to produce a new movie with Fox called “12 Rounds.” Incidentally, 12 is the same number of rounds you have to shoot from a .357 Magnum into a movie projector before it blows up.
